I'm preparing for my first elk hunt out west, and am trying to prepare a survival pack. What are the bare minimum items that I should pack with hopes of conserving weight?

Will you be using a pack horse?

You'll need gear for: shelter, heat, water & treatments for same, food, first aid, your medications, bad weather clothing, cooking, compass and maps, cell phone(s) and waterproof carrier; and your itinarary should be given to others, including your cell phone make and carrier, where you'll be and when to expect you back, knives, cordage, flashlights/headights, GPS in waterproof carrier, spare batteries.

These items should be carried on your person whenever you're afield.

The lightest weights for these items can usually be found on the internet.

Don't forget a knife sharpener, small saw (Gerber), water proof match containers.
