you might want to try the remington 260. the kick isnt bad and it has good bullet performance. i also believe it comes in a shorter stock as well. good luck

I would say the best gun is a gun that fits your build and a caliber that you can handle/shoot well. A gun that doesn't shoulder properly through length of pull* will be working against you. Savage and Remington sell youth model rifles that are centerfire bolt action. Where to get one? Check your local sporting goods store or a firearm dealer. If, the sporting goods store doesn't have what you are looking for the firearm dealer can order you the firearm of your choice. Check the yellow pages of your phonebook for a store or firearm dealer near you. Look up SavageArms.com or Remington.com via the Internet for rifles models and caliber. Also, on the Internet you can find a glossary of terms for firearms; try MidwayUSA.com. - GunTec Dictionary.

There is also managed recoil ammunition that you can buy, the ammo has good ballistics without the recoil associated with 'regular' ammo. If, you are going to use the managed recoil ammo look at what is available in a given caliber and purchase your rifle in that caliber, because managed recoil ammo is not sold in every caliber. Suggested calibers from me would be: .260 Remington, 7mm-08 Remington; there is also .243 Winchester and .308 Winchester that can be considered. If, you are interested in a lever action rifle they make managed recoil in 30-30 Winchester.

*Length of pull (LOP): Length of pull on a rifle is measured in inches from the face of the trigger to rear edge of the buttplate or recoil pad - center of pad, not the top or bottom of pad. To measure length of pull on the human body; one way is: measure from tip of crooked trigger finger to inside of crooked elbow (in a straight line) and that is what governs your personal length of pull. Match your LOP with the rifle's LOP. If, your LOP is 13 1/2 inches or greater than you can use an 'adult size' rifle. If it is less than 13 1/2 inches a youth model is in order. Hope this has been helpful to you.

The best gun for one may not work for another. Johnnie spelled it out very well. I am a big fan of the .270. The recoil is less than a .30-06 and has a longer range. If you have a gun with a wooden stock, the weight will help to dampen the recoil. It is flatt shooting and should last for years. Mossberg, Remington(my choice her), Winchester all make guns in this caliber. Just make sure it fits you before you buy it. The best gun in the world is useless if you can't tolerate shooting it.
If you decide a shotgun is the way to go, for a new shooter, a 20 gauge shotgun can be a good investment. Mossberg (my choice) and Remington are good firearms. You can also get a rifled slug barrel for those guns and they can pull double duty, for deer and birds and small game.

Savage also makes a sweet budget friendly 270.

I agree Mossberg or Remington shotguns in 20 ga.
