  • Jug puzzle.

    You have a 3-gallon jug and a 5-gallon jug.
Using just those two jugs, you need to measure out exactly 7 gallons.
    How can you do it?

Cap the 3-gallon, put it inside the 5-gallon, then fill the 5-gallon with water. It will only have room for 2 gallons. Dump those two gallons into another container, remove the 3-gallon jug from inside the 5-gallon, fill the 5-gallon with water. Those 5 gallons plus the 2 gallons from the first step will make 7 gallons.

Matt - That will work, but you needed a third container.
It can be done with just the two jugs, and no caps.
      Just pouring and dumping.

Given my math scores back in the day, I'm satisfied with figuring out as much as I did. Next question.

          And the answer is...(drum roll)...

Fill the 5-gallon jug and pour it into the 3-gallon jug, leaving 2 gallons in the 5-gallon jug.
Now dump the 3-gallon jug, leaving it empty.
Pour the remaining 2 gallons from the 5-gallon jug into the empty 3-gallon jug.
Now fill the 5-gallon jug and you have exactly 7 gallons.

We seem to assume that we are not allowed to just dump the contents of any of the jugs.

          Thanks for playing, Matt.
