  • Where is the other $1?

Three salesmen attend a convention. When they arrive, the hotel only has one room available and it's $30.
Each salesman pays $10 and they retreat to the room.
The clerk realizes the room was actually $25 and decided to repay his mistake.
He hands the bellhop $5 and tells him to divide it between the three salesmen.
The bellhop is unable to divide $5 by 3 evenly.
He sticks $2 in his pocket and gives each salesman $1.
    The three salesmen paid $10.
    They each get $1 back.

Therefore, the 3 salesman paid $9 each.
    3×9=27
The bellhop put $2 in his pocket.
    27+2=29

    Where did the $1 go?

No matter what the 3 men paid, the clerk gave the bellhop $5, the bellhop gave the men $3, he kept $2......$3+$2=$5, all square !

This story reminds me of another and an answer to your story:

There once lived a Delta operator. He was attached to a unit working in a small Latin American country.

One day, his CO brought him into a room, and told him that there were three high ranking hostages taken by the local factions. Due to logistics, the rescue of each would require that only one hostage be rescued at a time.

The first hostage was the father. He was a local business magnate, very wealthy, but in very poor health.

The second was the mother. Thin, cold and unpleasant, her life consisted solely with dealing with he husbands immense wealth and being unpleasant to all around her.

The third, was the 27-year old daughter, never married, very beautiful, and the sole heiress to her families wealth. She was rumored to have a penchant for dashing military men.

The CO finished the briefing with the following information: Whomever was rescued first, there was a strong possibility that the other two would soon be put to death, in retaliation for the mission.

So, what is the moral of this story, and the answer to your story?

“The order of operations is very important.”

But, bhr, if each man paid $10 and got $1 in change, then each paid $9.
No matter how you figure it, 3×9=27
Plus the $2 the bellhop kept. 27+2=29

Actually, bhr, amflyer got it right(?).
It's in the "order of the operations".

To get actual cost to each salesman, divide the $5 by 3. 5÷3=1.67.
Basically, the room cost each man $9.33 each or 9.33×3=27.99 (28?)
The $2 is the .67 the bellhop stuck on his pocket.
          28+2=30

Because of the .3333333...., you will still end up a penny short. Such is life! LOL!
