I'm going to start trapping this year, and I got permission to trap raccoon's from a neighbor, I'm not allowed to trap foxes though because he doesn't want his dogs caught, does anyone have any suggestions for a scent or bait that would attract the c

    Hi...

Just a NOTE regarding the water sets mentioned below...these sets can also be attractive to mink and otter as well...!!

Good luck with your new trapping venture...!!

    Hi...

My first suggestion is to trade (or at least try to) some of your leg-gripping traps with other trappers for dog proof ones.

Also, since dogs will eat a lot of 'people' food...I think that you would be taking a chance if you use such items for bait.

Imitation crayfish attached to the pan of a trap set under water will also sometimes work, as will fastening a dead fish in the water in front of your water sets.

There also sets using Conibears set in 'containers' attached to trees in such a manner that dogs typically cannot be caught.

Always check your hunting and trapping laws. Sometimes sets for various animals are described in same, as is done here in NY...!!

Thanks guys, i Only have one dog proof though and not enough to get more just now. I have a couple foot traps, if I would cover the pan on one with tin foil. Would that work if the grab the pan, or just setting a marshmallow on the pan?

Marshmallows, peanut butter, or basically anything sweet or fruity should attract coons but hold little if any interest for dogs. Using those types of attractants isn't going to be 100% effective though, so you may want to look into getting some dog-proof coon traps, as JM suggested. They are basically 100% dog-proof, and very easy to use. They aren't cheap, but a nice coon will still more than pay for a trap.

A dog will be interested in anything that it can smell. Look up the Duke Dog Proof Raccoon Trap. And to be safe, whenever possible, set it in an elevated location where a dog can't go(on a fallen tree, big branch, etc.).
