Between a pair of hunting bibs and a base layer pair of long johns, what is a good middle layer to wear for cold weather hunting?

The silk-weight long johns, aka a Ninja suit, is effective as a base layer since it is very thin. Ordinary denim or thick cotton sweatpants are a good middle layer as long as you have enough room to also wear the outer layer. In a pinch, take off the sweatpants, espeically if you're moving a lot.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one to put sweat pants under my insulated bibs! Standard snow blowing apparel last winter. Another option is a good wool shirt and pants. They are pricey but well worth it. Plus they last for years if properly cared for. You always have to be careful not to get too warm when moving around. Getting sweaty can make you stay cold all day since your clothes get damp.

@DSM,
That's why I like wearing a compression base layer that has the dry-fit or whatever they want to call it material. There have been times when I got back to the house and when looking at my long johns it looked like I had just been in a pool but felt perfectly warm/dry due to the compression layer.
