I have about 75 reload 12ga shells that I got from someplace and I don't trust them. How is the easiest way to break them down and save shot? The powder I will sprinkle on the grass and I don't want the hulls.

You can use a screwdriver to pry open the crimp and dump out the shot. A needle nose plier can pull out the wad so you can reuse the hull. It will take a while and be careful of sparks and static electricity.

I've done that a few times, and DSM's suggestion of prying the crimp open with a screwdriver or similar pointy object is the way I've always done it. Just take your time, and if you're a smoker, it might not be a good idea to light up while you're doing it .

take a sharp pocket knife and trim the rolled edge around the crimp. peal it off and dump the shot. use needle nose pliers to pull the wad and dump the powder. if you have a reloader pop out the primer. all can be reused.
