We had a good deer camp this year. Lots of nice bucks and big does. All the feeding that is being done during the summer in the area is paying off.
I am looking forward to the Election in November and the Conservatives taking control of the Senate. If they fail to take the majority we are in terrible shape going forward, unhindered toward a total Marxist/socialist type of Big Government. That would mark the end of the USA as we know it.

My highlight of the past year as far as hunting was concerned was taking a nice buck with my bow on Thanksgiving morning. I've always wanted to shoot a deer on Thanksgiving, so that was really cool. Also notable were the record-high fur prices this fall, which enabled me to actually do better than break even trapping for possibly the first time ever, although I didn't do as much I would've liked because of the early onset of winter.
As far as 2014 goes, I am hoping that the weather is a bit more normal (whatever that means anymore) - the last few years have seen the Upper Midwest be subjected to record-setting heat in the summer of 2011, a record drought in 2012, a record wet spring in 2013 (seeing a pattern here?), and then a near-record drought again in the summer of 2013. I am ready for some less-extreme weather!

For some reason my response isn't showing up?
-The thing I am looking forward to in 2014 is trapping. Due to my busy schedule this year I was not able to do any trapping the majority of this year. The best story has to be seeing my friend screaming like a little girl after he killed his first deer(happy screaming).

JM, I had that same issue with one of my comments (on a different thread), finally the OL web editor had to post it for me. Must be another of the notorious OL website gremlins.

Hey guys its been a long time since i ve been on the sight. Good to read some of you are still on. I had an awesome season both of my kids got doe this year, me and my father-in-law scored in bear season, and I dropped a good buck. Didnt have time to get in the woods with my bow. Plans for 2014 the kids to get bucks.

This is the first time in a long time I've been able to log in. As some others are reporting OL has some serious site problems. So I hope OL gets them fixed in 2014.
Closing out 2013 I killed my coldest day turkeys ever at a balmy 25 below zero. Killed one gobbler on fly down in unit 3 he was froze on my shoulder by the time I got back to the truck. That afternoon it warmed up to 5 below so I went out again in my home unit number 4. Called in and killed a jenny and a jake. Unfortunately it was too cold for Turkey Dog Vic to hunt so he had to stay home.
The temps in 2013 were 20-30 degrees below normal we even had endure spring turkey hunting in 20 inches of snow the first week of May. This was awfully late in the spring to be shooting turkeys in the snow. My 2014 hope is the weather will be more "average".
Happy hunting in the New Year to all.
              later,
              charlie

I have not been a very active contibutor on this site during the past year. But I have visited and read most of everyone's posts. I am much more of a fisherman than hunter and lean more to that direction. I have been fairly active on a sister publication until the morning of Janurary 1st, 2014 when suddenly all the posts I tried to make were automaticaly turned down by their spam filter. I was a faithful steward of all the rules of their site, tried to be polite and courteous, and not use language which would be inapproiate. Their spam filter banished me and now I respond in like to them. So for any of you that are on both sites, I will patronize OL and hope that you all will accept me here even though I am not an avid SPORT hunter. Even though I am an avid fisherman, I have, over the last fifteen years, hunted, traped, and killed both feral hogs and coyote because they do have to be CONTROLLED in my area. Thus, I do have some experience in that venue. I hope that 2014 will be a good year for all of you and that I will be able to live through it myself while wetting a fish hook as often as possible..........Santa

Welcome santa you'll find quite a bit of fishing related material on OL. However, from time to time that spam filter you refer to gets out of hand here also.

Had a great year. Shot some dove and a nice buck but the best time I had was taking a new friend deer hunting for the first time. He might of missed but I think he is hooked.

Thank you Charlie. I remember that you welcomed me here originally about three and a quarter or so years ago. Back then there was an awful problem with too much spam making its way into the posts. But Bonnier did work on the problem and I have not seen any of those old type spam posts for quite a while. I have been real patient with the captcha things and really do not mind them at all. They seem to have been a great help in fighting the spam problem when it had gotten out of hand. I gladly take my hat off in respect to the powers that did put forth the effort to help stop the spam. But it was when the spam filter automatically deemed my posts spam and deleted them without even a chance to use the captcha, that I got upset with the sister publication. I look forward to enjoying this site during the new year and hope that I can learn a few new things and maybe even contribute a little.

Good discussion, and good to see old friends back - I'm hoping to have more time to hunt with my bow in 2014. For the first time in many years, I did not even hunt with stick and string last year. Highlight of my 2013 season was my boy killing a cow moose, with a slug gun, my 9-year-old daughter asking if she could hunt doves (no, must be 12 in Montana), and my other boy waiting for a solid hour on shooting sticks for a buck to give him a clear shot. He made a beautiful heart shot with numb arms and aching legs. I hope our spam filter and buggy comment process doesn't turn you off. If you have problems, please reach out to me at [email protected]
