What is the main thing you do to prepare for deer season?

I do a lot of stuff, so it's kind of hard to say what the "main" thing is, but the biggest thing in terms of time and effort is hanging tree stands.

Combination of what huntfishtrap and Bow-king said. I'm not really sure you can call it 'preparing' but I also spend a lot of time watching old videos/looking at pictures/telling stories with friends from the previous years(I'll call it mental preparation).

Just like the others said shooting, scouting, trail cameras, checking and hanging stands there all main things that need to be done.

Mainly just make sure I live from one season to the next, then I bush hog several miles of trails and plant about a dozen food plots. I check the tree stands for safety and clear the spider webs and wasp nests out of the box blinds, putting out D-con where necessary where wood rats have taken up residence. I use the machete to clear the year's growth of limbs from the road so the Jeep won't get all scratched up and clear leaves and debris from the approaches to the blinds and stands. I sight in my rifles, then I go fishing until opening day.

I make sure I still have the options to hunt several different areas, and what changes may have altered the landscape.

With more and more seasons within the year, sometimes deer hunting slips up on a person. One main thing I do is make sure the wife knows that deer season is starting and will be in progress for months. I find that some notification goes a long way in controlling the static when other events (grandkid birthdays, repair work, etc.) come up, as well.

After that, it is deciding on a place to hunt and making a list of equipment to take, especially the stuff that is required by law like hunter orange. I drove 70 miles one time only to find out I forgot hunter orange and no place close to buy it. Hunt over.
