Love it. When the deer population can support it, it will put a lot of meat in the freezer. Here in Mt. when the whitetail population was way out of balance FWP would sell you six antlerless whitetail tags. Myself and a lot of my friends would harvest all six deer and if we didn't have room for the meat the food banks would get it.

I'm all in favor of taking the excess deer population out. Killing some can save them all from disease and starvation. Hunters and farmers win, as do the deer, but the ones that get shot probably wouldn't agree.

As long as the deer really are causing a problem, and it's done in a controlled, responsible manner, than I don't have a problem with it at all.
When it can become an issue is when farmers complain about supposedly terrible crop damage which isn't really that severe (I have seen cases like this myself), leading the DNR to increase tag numbers, dropping the deer population to lower than desirable levels, as has been the case in some parts of Iowa in recent years.

Im for it if its a problem. And yeah its a good chance to fill the freezer. cjohnsrud what did the tags cost? In PA as long as you have a current hunting license you can take one deer per farm per year the land owner has the tags and you dont pay anything.

25-06.. I believe they were $5 a piece. And there were a set limit per Block Management Area. The Block Management Area here in Mt. is where private landowners enroll in a system with the MFWP and open their land to hunters and get paid per head thru the system. These game damage hunts would only take place on these lands enrolled in the block management program.

I think it is great idea if you can get permission from the farmer.

Years ago I went to a New Jersey Fish and Game Public Hearing on some changes to the rules and regulations. Twenty farmers came to that same meeting to complain about deer destroying their crops.

After the meeting was over different hunters including myself asked permission to hunt their farms. The farmers all said "no"!
