Im planning my first trip out west for pornghorn and mule deer. Any suggestions on what states/units to start with? Also what make/model/caliber gun should i get? Im also planning to hunt elk sometime so i would ike a gun i could use for that to. Im a long range freak but dont want to spend much over $400 on a gun. any tips or advice would be great. Thanks!

25-06 for everything, but you may want something more for elk. 7mmMag would handle everything but be a little over for the pronghorn.
$400 is on the low side but you may find a good used rifle for a few hundred more and then only have to decide on optics, or, luck out and find one that has the base, rings and scope already included.
Take your time and check the used gun racks, ad's and places like gunsamerica.com and gunbroker.com
    Good luck.

I did all my antelope and mule deer hunting in Wyoming. I hunted pronghorns north of Rawlins near the Ferris Mountains. My mule deer hunting was west of Kaycee in the southern tip of the Big Horns. There are lots of good calibers for that type of hunting. I used a 264 Win Mag mostly. But also used a 308, a 30-06, and a 300 Win Mag. Good luck.

30-06 with 150 gr bullets for the antelope and 180 gr for the elk would be a good choice. The old '06 has so many factory ammo options that you can tailor the round to whatever game you are seeking. In addition, there would be a good selection of used rifles in this most common of calibers.
