    .223 or .22 WMR for coyotes? shots will rarely be over 150 yards. also, what rifles chambered in these calibers would you recommend? looking for something around $200-$250

    I would always choose the 223. I like the 22 WMR but the 223 has so much more oomph.

      At least you can buy 22 WMR bullets. You might have to throw the .223 at the coyote.

        .223. I own a .22 WMR, and it's a nice caliber for close-range varmints, but it just doesn't have the wallop to cleanly kill coyotes consistently, unless you're taking head shots. I hate to say it, but you won't find a new rifle in .223 in your price range though, so if that's all you can spend it'll have to be a used one. If you are willing to go a little higher, Savage and Weatherby both make good rifles in .223 for ~ $350-$500.

          Spend just $100 more dollars and get a Savage BMag in Winchester .17 WSM. Your reward will come back in ammo savings. .30 a round instead of .50 or higher.
