I am constantly hearing stories about guys being able to sneak up on deer and taking them with a knife. I can't even keep a deer from spooking at 20 yards let alone on top of them,literally. Does anyone else know more of these hilarious stories or have one about themself?

I have heard those stories to. They would take the cold ashes from a fire and rub them all over their body to absorb scent. Then position themselves in brush along side a well known deer trail. It was suppose to work but i do not think i will try it any time soon.

-First I just want to ask where this is legal? Sounds pretty unsportsmanlike to me...
-I've had deer walk in on me within 5 feet, but even then it would of been out of knife range and they would of seen me as soon as I moved. Like JHP said, I am guessing they set up and let the deer come to them instead of trying to move at the deer.
-The funniest thing I hear around here is people lying about how far their shot was(saying shot was longer than it actually was) and how much their deer weighed. I was recently shown a picture of a buck a guy killed and he said it was 23" wide and weighed 305pds field dressed...that deer was no more than ears wide and 200 pounds.

I once smacked one on the rump as a dare, but as I have a hard enough harvesting one with a bow, I don't see how knifing is going to be a productive, nor safe, use of my time. I heard a first hand account of a groundskeeper ambushing one jumping from a golf cart with a knife, but the folks in question were all nuts.
JM - I do wonder why you think it would be unsporting?

@JM
You are probably correct.
I know of a couple of people who attempted to finish wounded deer with a knife. One pair of guys I know collected a lot of bruises. Another gentleman had a heart attack and didn't survive the encounter. Those animals were already in bad straits. Respect the deer.

@jcarlin,
I had a similar when I had just started hunting and shot a doe. When I walked up she was still alive and I did not know what to do so I tried to cut it's throat with a knife. I leaned in and she kicked and cut the bottom of my forearm through two long sleeve t-shirts and a sweatshirt. Was so full of adrenaline I didn't even realize it until I got home and saw that my entire white sleeve had turned red(It wasn't a bad cut, it was just in one of those spots where it doesn't want to stop bleeding). Without 3 layers on I might of been in trouble.

Hi...
Well, those stories haven't gotten around to me yet (thankfully).
I don't know why a deer couldn't be killed with a knife...but it's the "sneaking up on one" that I have to say is urban legend...!!
And, in some States, that would NOT be legal. The deer would not have been taken by those means set out by the Fish & Game laws.
