If a deer is running past me on a deer drive, what can I do to make it stop. Besides shoot it.

Grunt noise/whistle/short yell...they are running because they are scared though, so stopping them wont be easy. And if you do get them to stop it wont be for long so be ready.

I usually start out trying to stop them with a mouth bleat/grunt. The if that doesn't do the trick, I'll whistle at them. If neither of those methods works, then you could literally yell at them, but if the bleating/whistling doesn't stop them, generally nothing will. Usually they're gone by the time you'd get to yelling anyway.

Barking is one way to re-startle (I think I just coined a new word!) a deer.

But let me see if I've got this right...you're a deer hunter on a drive (or stand?) and a deer comes running past you. Your post indicates that you could shoot it, right? So why in the world would you want only to stop it...??

Bob Hansen: Maybe he wants to stop it so he can take a nice, clean, easy standing shot, rather than a messy low-percentage running shot.

JM had an exellent answer, as did huntfishtrap. I don't know who is handing out the dings or what the reason is.
I've yelled at running deer and had one or two stop or pause, but mostly they just got lower to the ground and turned on the afterburners. Just lead 'em like you would a bird.

Piney, must be somebody who doesn't like deer drives around here. I've heard there are such people, but I've never been able to understand their viewpoint.

Piney, huntfishtrap: I’ve never understood the whole vote down thing. I equate that to a kid running by someone on the playground and punching them in the back. Opposing viewpoint here is half the fun and also a chance for us to learn. It is certainly anyone’s right to disagree with a statement, but they should add their own to dispute it.
