today i cought the biggest buck ive ever seen in my life bedded with a doe. i was able to sneak down wind and to within 30 yards of them. i was sitting waiting on him to stand up with all of sudden he just stands up and runs as fast as he can with his tail tucked between his legs. i watched him run clear to the neighboring property. im sick to my stomach and am very scared he'll never come back, i mean he really has no need to right? what should i do?

Sounds like the wind swirled on you, and he caught a whiff of your scent. I know it's not what you want to hear, but there's really nothing you can do, other than wait and hope he comes back. I wouldn't be surprised if he does come back, but I can't say for sure. -

Having his tail penned down is a good sign since deer automatically raise their tails when alarmed. You might of gotten lucky. Like huntfishtrap said, the wind might of swirled but maybe he smelled another doe in the area instead of smelling you.Comment

Wait and see is all you can do. It depends on how badly he was startled. JM, I read a study a couple years ago that deer may not be as likely to flag anymore as they once were. It may be an evolving defense mechanism or as they say survival of the fittest.Comment

He will be back. I am a dog hunter, when we jump a deer and it is not killed, it will usually be back in the same spot by next morning. Go sit there today and wait for him to come back.Comment

I've never heard that, pretty interesting. I have never seen a deer that kept it's tail down. I still feel like that is a good sign that it was not completely alarmed and that the buck will be back.Comment

JM, big bucks generally don't raise their tails when alarmed, they just get the heck out of Dodge. The tail-raising instinct is seen most often in does, who automatically flag to warn their fawns of trouble, and to give then something to follow as they're running away from danger.Comment
