    JM covered it pretty well, but I would add that the first and last hours of light are usually the best time to call, except at the peak of the rut, when any time is a good time.

    You can call at any point during the day, just wait a few minutes to settle down after getting to your spot before calling. What's more important is knowing how often to call, but this is something you will have to learn from experience. You are better off calling less at the beginning, because doing to much can spook deer. Try watching some YouTube videos on calling in deer.
