The woods are so blasted thick here in the summer I don't get to see many deer, but what few groups of bucks I have seen seem to be at random regarding size. In the fall, before the rut starts, it appears that larger bucks like to hang out with one or two smaller ones. Every time I see a forkhorn, I start looking behind him for a bigger buddy.

In my experience, large, mature bucks generally prefer to hang out with smaller-bodied, younger bucks in the summer. I have very rarely seen two or more large-bodied, mature (i.e. dominant) bucks together anytime. I would say that it's probably a result of dominance, but I don't know for certain.

I apologize for that. It's still pretty random, but I do believe older deer prefer being with older deer(based on what I have seen). Where I live it seems like older deer also prefer being in large groups where there are many mature deer, but also many young deer. I hardly ever see old mature deer in small groups where I live. I do not think body/antler size has anything to do with it though. I think it is just that they have lived longer and are smarter.

Actually I was talking age and body size.

I have seen groups with pretty much every combination of rack sizes imaginable(I'm guessing that you are referring to the antlers when you say "bigger bucks"). Based on that I am going to say it is at random. During the summer bucks don't have hormones flowing, so antler size doesn't really matter.
