I was out scouting turkeys with my dad around the end of March. We walked back to the truck and seen some deer out grazing in the field. Well I suddenly threw up my binoculars and noticed one still had horns(it looked to be young 4pt). Is there some reason he still had horns on or do southern deer shed at a diffrent time than northern deer.

Most deer shed at different times. He could have some sort of a genetic defect, he could also have injured himself.

yeah sometimes southern (warmer weather) deer shed them later. But it also depends on the buck's specific genetics. Some bucks will shed early and some won't shed until late march or even april. Plus the fact that it was a smaller buck means that he has less chances of knocking his antlers off on something. Bigger bucks hit branches or other stuff that just takes the antler off for them.

I hunted Florida all my life,it's the only place I've ever hunted and I've seen younger smaller bucks still sporting antlers into the second week of April. The two biggest factors are genetics and size, that is what I've been told by several different veteran hunters.

Deer from different parts of the country will shed at different times, so it's not uncommon. It also makes sense as environmental conditions differ greatly from place to place, which likely plays a factor in this. Genetics would also play a role as the populations of deer aren't contained so gene flow does occur from population to population.

its more likley to be a genetic defect, most deer lost their horns in january - i havent even seen anything with horns since febuary

the deer around our ranch in Lincoln County, New Mexice do not drop last years antlers until May or June.
