There is no wrong answer to this question. Personally:30-06 with a 3-9 scope...nice and simple.

Either will work fine for whitetail, I like the 30-06 myself, but it just comes down to personal choice.

You can't go wrong with either one, I like the 308 with a 3-9 or 2-7 Leupold.

Either caliber is good for deer. It's all about accuracy and shot placement. My experience has been you can't beat the 308 with the right load. As for scopes, don't cheap out, I'm a Leupold man.

I've owned both a 308 and a 30-06. As others have said, you can't go wrong with either. Check out the Redfield line of scopes for starters.

If you think you'll ever hunt anything bigger than whitetails, go with the 30-06. If that doesn't seem likely, go with the .308. Everybody has an opinion on scopes, but the main thing to remember is you get what you pay for.

I actually have the Redfield Revolution scope that DSM mentioned below. I've got the 3x9-40 model on my .17HMR and love it. Really nice glass for the money.

the 30.06 is usually more available for ammo and also more size bullets to choose from

30-06 and 308 are both great calibers. Both firearms have been in use by the military and fought in many battles with trained soldiers. The calibers both get the job done when hunting. I really like Nikon's line up of scopes.

the 308 is said to be the most accurate caliber out there and can kill a white tail no problem and the 30-06 is also a great versatile all around good big game caliber i own a 308. and i love it i have had 30-06s and love them. i personally would go with saying this is a bolt action rifle. 308. with a Nikon buck masters if u have the extra 40$ or a cheaper but good pro staff or any leoupould scope is great.
