ok,so we all know when treestand hunting the higher we go the less likely or scent will betray our positions,also the angle becomes more of a factor,all things being equal wind conditions,terrain,understory canopy. what do you say is the optimum height to hunt from a treestand ?

I've always liked and been successful right about 18 ft. I have had deer around and under me at that height for long periods of time and never been busted, unless of course I did something stupid...

I carry a string with me that I use to pull up my equipment. It is exactly 18 feet long. When the string pulls tight while I'm climbing I know I am at 18 feet.

I shot deer between 12ft and 30ft. I like being around 20ft with a bow because with a bow I have to lean to shot. But I like being 30ft with a firearm because I just sit there and shoot.

I like my stand at about 12 to 15 feet. I'm comfortable there and I have never had an issue with shooting or being seen by game.

I've never had much luck with treestands. Of course, I'm from Idaho, so one side is a 40 ft drop and from the other the deer look you in the eye!

I prefer 15-18 feet, if I get any higher than that I start to freak out a bit (I don't do too well with heights), and if I get lower I start to have deer busting me even if I sit perfectly still. I've never had much problem at those heights though, unless I do something dumb like move when the deer are looking at me.

Bow season I never go more than 15-20ft. Above that and you lose too many close shots due to the severe angle. Shotgun season in the Midwest I'm at 20ft, but I have friends that are 30-35ft and they always are filling the freezer.
