A lot is going to depend on the SKS. Is yours accurate enough to hunt deer with? The cartridge will certainly kill a deer at a reasonable range. I personally would look around for a good used Marlin 30-30 or 35 Rem.

I use SKS for deer hunting sometimes. Be careful when you are jacking a cartridge into the chamber. The gun has a tendency to fire when the bolt slams home, if the safety is off. I have had that happen a couple times. It is because of the way the firing pin is designed. I have never had the gun go off if the safety WAS ON

PUT THE SAFETY ON BEFORE JACKING A ROUND INTO THE CHAMBER. ALWAYS KEEP THE GUN POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION.
