Also I forgot to mention, I think for the most part smaller bucks keep their horns for longer. I think that the bigger ones are heavier and easier to fall off. I could be wrong about this because the bigger ones also have stronger bases that could hold on longer.
Could make another good question on here?

Yesterday, (3/24/11) I watched 12 bull elk here in Eastern Ky. There was one nice one but the rest was small. They were actually sparring. Several of them were taking turns just playing/sparring for about an hour. I really enjoyed watch them. I don't know much about elk though. So is this normal/ when do they drop their antlers. I was going to go out shed hunting but I think I might wait a while now. Anyone know when they drop?

In MT deer usually lose their antlers in January/Febuary and elk lose in March/April. In May, usually May 1st, is when the WMA's open to shed hunting same as Jackson hole i beleive.
This is all just the average but all deer and elk are different and are different is certain areas.
I have shed hunted one spot and found horns and never see bucks with horns and then go 5-10 miles away and I'll see 5-10 bucks with horns still.
I know also that if there is even one deer still in esterus or has late esterus, some of the bucks will keep their horns longer.
