Would like to take my 8yr old Lab camping with me in cold weather. I know to put some kind of insulation under him but do I need to put a blanket of some kind on top? We would be in a tent.

Does your dog typical spend most nights sleeping indoors or in an outdoor kennel? If its mostly an indoor dog,an old blanket or jacket tossed over him will probally give both of you a better nights sleep.A cold dog will stick to you like glue for body heat.If your sleeping on the floor, its not a big issue, the shared bodyheat can benefit both you and your dog,but if your crashed out in a camp cot having a 70lb dog try to squeeze in with you can make for a long night.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but.... Labs have short top hair and I don't think they have much down hair close to the skin, so it wouldn't hurt to put a blanket or something over him to keep him warm. Nothing worse than being cold.

Johnnie,Labs coats are more than suited for cold weather, which is one of the reasons their so highly regarded by waterfowlers.Hunting sea ducks on the North Atlantic,Ive seen Labs almost completely encrusted with frozen seawater and snow and still have a crazy over enthusatist look in their eyes as if they are say "Im only quitting when you do".But dogs like this rarely enjoy the warmth of indoor living.

lol don't worry about the dog,,JAKE'S point should be well noted as lab's are well suited to cold wet conditions.

Put a blanket on the dog-if he doesn't need it he'll move it off.

Yeah, I didn't think about that BigJake :-) I'm use to owning dogs with thick fur coats.

Don't worry about your Lab. Not only do Labs have the double coat for protetion in cold water/weather, dogs in general are more suited to the cold than humans. They don't sweat and instead retain that body heat much more efficiently than we do (one reason your really have to watch for over-heating signs when working in warm weather). Throw a blanket down on the ground and he may or may not use it. Of course, if he's anything like my dog, who regularly sleeps in the bed, if you're in a cot he might still try to climb up there!

Hi Johnnie. They are cold weather fur and in fact have two very thick coats of fur. They are bred for retrieving water fowl in the icy waters of Canada! They have a very thick, soft, down undercoat, which insulates them quite well, and also have another thick, but coarse outer coat, that helps to wick away moisture. Recently went out in the middle of our only snow of the year, a blizzard with 4 feet, with my lab pup who was then 9 mo. We were all freezing in the cold and wind. She loved it! And just shook the snow and ice off like it was nothing. I worry much more about her over heating than being cold. I would always have her in the tent with me but have a pad down for her (though she usually sleeps on top of the pillows or our heads ;-). Under 40-45F, I'd offer her a top blanket or doggie "sleep" bag. Under 35-40, she always had the option to come in with us or use her own doggie sleeping bag. They'll do what makes the comfy, but they are cold weather dogs.
