Does anyone else feel that hunting and fishing aren't as popular among younger people such as the college years age group? Being a college student myself it seems like there are very few people who want to go out and enjoy the outdoors to do anything.

I think that depends on your school and some what on your major. I was an agriculture major and most of us hunted. I took a shooting class just for fun and was suprised by the number of people in it that had never shot and most of them were business or pe majors.

I'm an environmental studies major and the school is supposed to be big on conservation but i've found that most of the people in my major and similar science fields of study, including the outdoor recreation majors don't fish or hunt, or even really care at all. I'm trying to start a club on campus to reverse that and try to foster more interest in hunting and fishing. So far it's been nothing but an uphill battle with me and three or four fishing and hunting buddies.

At my college the biggest deciding factor on their interest in the outdoors was where they grew up rather than their age. As far as the school, try flyers and a facebook group. Also, don't leave out recruiting people who don't currently hunt or fish; there's usually a few willing to try something new.

Yes I agree with you. My friends that I hunt and fish with have talked about this many times.I'm from New York and it is sad to see the lack of participation from the younger generation. Some of our belief's is,that it's partly on the change of society. Some of those might agree that the introduction of video games (causing laziness in children), to the negative exposure of firearms, is only to name a few.It appears that more and more people are getting away from wanting to do things outdoors.By shifting their attention to dressing in there designer clothing and worrying about their hair.As we all know, a hunting hat does alter your best "gelled" hair style. And not to forget how you might smell after you've hiked around in the woods and sweated, or the fish smell on your hands after a successful morning of fishing. My comments only scratch the surface of the many more reasons why.

The biggest reason is parents. We have let our kids become lazy, I'm a parent and most times it is easier to go without the kid. Any time I ask I get the look, like I'm crazy. Kids today will not walk across the street with out thier ipod or cell phone. They might miss a text. They would rather stay home with the ipod, cell and computer.

I go to school at the University of Maine Machias. I was and still am into video games and stuff but I still make time for the outdoors, actually found some bobcat tracks the otehr day snowshoeing. I'm definitely trying to make the effort to get more people involved with the outdoors, but I don't think that it's just a person's upbringing, but also other authority figures. I'm finding that the administration and other persons in positions that determine a clubs existence aren't all that keen on the idea. Maybe it's a shift in society today, anyone who enjoys the outdoors really needs to show others that going into the woods hiking, fishing, hunting, etc... is a great experience. I'm going to continue trying to get my generation more involved with the outdoors while I'm still in college.

You don't have to feel this one, studies have backed up that fewer and fewer people are hunting anymore.

I feel like there are so many things preventing people from getting into the sport that it's unreal. Boomers too busy working to take their kids so Gen X and Millenials never learned, Gen Z's are different but their so politically polarized they think all hunting is a hillbilly blood sport.
