You can plant both---a soil test perhaps at your local farm store or garden center before you buy seed to establish what will perform best on your site---alfalfa -clover- trefoil are all forage plants that will provide food year after year---annual crops such as corn- soybeans- wheat-oats barley---corn is preferred for standing in snow over the winter if that is a factor where you live---food plots should be at least 3 acres---I always suggest leasing some land out to a farmer with a provision in the lease that leaves some crop standing(do not worry about hay crops they will grow back) in the field---2-3% perhaps---this arrangement can distance you from the cost of establishing a food plot and perhaps earn income in the form of rent from the farmer---you could spend the extra money on hunting gear
