I have been hunting a piece of land for 25yrs now, and with in the last 5yrs i have seen a good number of one sided racks. Is there somthing in a whitetail deer where they can pass this on from year to year or are there that many deer that are knocking off a antler when they are in velvet?

I have noticed over the years that while on late December bow hunts bucks with only one antler remaining--after seeing them earlier in the season with two.I think normally in our area they drop antlers in January.Injuries can contribute to only one antler developing normally and a very small growth of antler or none at all in contrast. As for genetics being a contributing factor there exists a possibility of any abnormality being introduced.Years ago we harvested a smaller buck that exhibited three small antlers or the initial development of three but on closer inspection the one antler was just an abnormal development--result of an injury or genetic variation perhaps.
