  • Have you seen deer play possum?

    Stealth

  • #2
Into my stand early after noon,I happened upon a buck working over a sapling, when he realized I was there,I was only about 40yards away,he froze. I had no intention on a shot,he was medium size buck, plus even if I wanted ,it was just to thick. Lol Mexican stand off, after about 5 minutes he turned and kinda snuck his way out of there, I started thinking how many deer do we waltz right past without ever realizing how close they let us get .

I have spotted multiple deer standing or bedded down while walking in the woods....the only thing that will get them up and running is if I stop walking. So, yes, they will play possum, and I am sure there are tons of deer around us that we never see.

Yes, sometimes when they've been shot they'll act dead and then attack, that is why I always come up on them bow/ gun up.

Also, I saw some videos of a gun walking up on a perfectly healthy buck playing possum until after he was touching it.
there are some pretty good videos out there on the web.

I once spotted one 'hiding' behind a tree. his body was at a right angle to me and antlers were sticking out from both side of the tree trunk. The only thing hidden from me was his face! I enjoyed the comic nature of it and decided not to kill him, lol!

I was thinking about The Far Side over the weekend, that one with the woolly mammoths stamping out the cavemen and the one mammoth says, "Is it just me, or are there more and more of these things every year?!" And the one with the gigantic mammoth lying dead with the one tiny arrow in it, and the caveman says to his buddy, "We should write that spot down." (I had the Far Side on the brain because I was going through some old books and couldn't find my Far Side collections ... now I'm wracking my brain trying to remember who I loaned them to).

Matt, those are funny! I need to find them sometime. Larson sure was unique in his humor.

No, but I've seen them play "buck 'n doe".
                Does that count?
