All I have to hunt with right now is a 20 guage single shot modified barrel and you cant put a choke on it. So i was wondering what is the best shot to use that will down a turkey out to 30-40 yards. Also all i have right now is some number 6 shot. any advice?

High brass #6 should work fine, but with a 20 gauge, you should not attempt to shoot past 30 yards. Use high density shot such as Hevi-Shot for more effective killing power.

I would agree that high brass #6 will work, I myself would rather use high brass #4s, also just speaking for myself with a 20 gauge I would try to keep my shots at twenty yards or less with a modified choke.

Good catch on the modified choke, mesarich. I missed that. I'd still go for the high density #6 shot just for pattern density, but that's just me. I haven't tried any of the mixed shot size ammo, but that would be a good choice, too, I think.

When I shot 20 gauge I used high brass #6 and killed everybird I shot at. DO NOT try to shoot one past 25 yards. You are asking for one to run.

If legal use 3 inch shell #7 HD shot, pattern the gun and keep shots to 25yds or less.
