I'm planning on buying a dog and want to train it to retrieve over the summer. I hunt mostly ducks and geese but sometimes hunt pheasant and quail. I have been looking at the Irish Setters would they be a good dog for this? Any other tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

i wouldn't recommend an Irish setter in your situation. Not a good water dog. look at German short hairs, German wire hairs, springers, wirehaired vizsla and labs with a pointing stock background.

It is hard to beat a good lab for a waterfowl retriever, but they are not known to be good pointers at all. Yet they will still retrieve just about anything so if retrieveing is the main purpose, my choice is a well trained lab.

Labs IMO are the way to go. Great family dog too.
