I really prefer a centerfire rifle over the weaker rimfire.The extra power, extended ranges and high fragmentation bullets kill much better than the rimfire, BUT, in a pinch a .22 will drop a yote but I'd keep ranges under 75yards and would use a hollowpoint bullet.As with most animals a heart/lung shot is the most ethical shot to take.

Ditto bigjake. Using a centerfire, you would be less likely to wound a coyote. The object is to kill them, not make them suffer. The .22 will work if the conditions are just right, but you can do better. I once killed a 200+ lb. hog with a .22 by shooting it in the earhole at 30 yards, but it was the only gun I had with me and not one I'd choose for hog hunting.

I agree with bigjake and pineywoods, if pushed into service the.22 could do the job at limited ranges and with proper placement. Knowing that it is not the rifle of choice suggests it would be more responsible to choose a centerfire rifle with more hitting power. Wounding an animal is not good. Any hunter should be pained to see it happen or their head is in the wrong place.

A .22 will kill a coyote but there are so many better guns to use instead. If you want to use a .22 thats fine but you wont be able to take long range shots that frequently present themselves in coyote hunting. If you are stuck on the .22 then I would suggest using a .22 magnum. Use hollow point bullets. I personally use a .22-.250 for coyotes and have been very pleased with it. It is a great all around varmint gun.

if it is a 22 lr no it is not good. A 22 mag might work , but i would go with a 22-250 or a 223.

You would probably be better off with a smaller centerfire rifle. A .22 might work if you hit it in the lungs and heart but you will deffidently kill it if you use something like a .223, .22-.250, or a .204 ruger. I have been hunting coyotes for a few years and i have killed them with a .223 with very badly placed shots and it still killed them.

I have killed prob a half dozen yotes with my 10/22. It works fine, though most have been head shots or close ups. The farthest being about thirty yards.

Its not the best but I like to use a 17 hmr & up so I can get the job done quick without fear of wounding one.
