So I just read the article in OL on the .17 SuperMag. Do you think it's going to give some of these varmint rounds a run for their money like .223,.204, and .22-250? Price seems to be cheap, velocity sounds nice, and I really liked to hear about the resistance to wind that rounds like the .204 suffer with. Besides how you think it'll do, how much would you wanna pay for one of these rifles?

-I do not see any caliber ever gaining as much popularity as the .223, but at the same time I would not be surprised if the .17WSM does. I can definitely see it overtaking the .22-250 in popularity and really putting a hurt on the .22Mag and the .17hmr(Say adios to the .17hmr).
-I think Savage(the first ones to release a rifle chambered in 17WSM), will charge around $1200(Pure guess) which is more than I am willing to spend until it can be proven by other people in the field.

Do you think that the .17WSM will be able to shoot .17HMR out of it just as a .357mag can shoot .38spl?

Savage is making a new rifle chambered in .17WSM that will come with the accu-trigger and a rotary magazine. Based on this I am going to assume that the average .17hmr will not be able to shoot the .17WSM. Longer case and much higher pressure.

I'm not sure this new rimfire round is intended to compete with the 223 or the 22-250. I think its purpose is to provide another, faster, and more efficient rim fire round. I will be interested to hear more about its actually performance on varmints in the field.

Will the .17hmr rifle be able to be re chambered for the .17wsm ?

If it's marketed as a competitor with centerfires, it's not going to make it. Yes, the ballistics are nice...for a rimfire, but it's still nowhere near as good as the .223, .22-250, .243, .220, or .204 in terms of wind drift, flatness of trajectory, and terminal performance. The only thing it has on the small centerfires is price. It is actually quite similar ballistically to the .17 Remington (centerfire), but how many of those do you see around these days? The best future I can see for this round is that it might replace the .17 HMR.

If someone owns a small caliber center fire or a .17 HMR, I see no reason they would buy one of these. They will still be out performed by the center fires and frankly aren’t so astoundingly different from a HMR to warrant buying one. I just don’t see the .17 HMR going anywhere.

Some Countries and states in the United States only allow rimfire for varmint hunting so it could be successful in these locations.

They wiil kill yotes but you may not find anything but blood trail. Stick with 223 or 22.250 if you want the pelts!

I have shot three coyotes with .17 wsm and it's perfect 250 yards they don't even know what hit them and they don't run far I use 20 grain as well and almost no mark on the pelt if you want to keep it I kept 2 of mine
