I bought a set of these traps for a farmer friend who had a coon problem in and around his buildings. He baits them with a few kernels of dry dog food.
He loves these traps and no longer has a coon problem.

Hi...
Since you've had luck with 'coons using Hawbaker's lures, have you considered putting some lure on a cotton ball, and placing that under the trigger?

Try squirting some lines of fish oil around the trap in several different directions, and then putting either one large or several small marshmallows under the trigger. I would be surprised if that doesn't do the trick.

Try putting some honey/maple syrup/lure on top of the bait and around the outside of the trap or just put some of the lure on the ground around the trap to attract them.
-We have always had luck setting a large marshmallow covered in maple syrup right on top of the trap with the smaller marshmallows on the inside.
-We do not have persimmon trees where I trap, so I do not know about using it as bait.

I've used cat food with no luck. But would persimmons work? I've used pocket sets with hawbaker's coon lure and honey and caught coons with that. How could I apply this combo to the DP trap?

I actually bait them completely full and lay some bait on the ground around it....let the coons eat there way down until they accidentally pull up on the trigger.

Hi...
PS...
Have you been baiting it according to instructions? For DPs, the bait usually goes UNDER the trigger...if you are trying to catch 'coons.

Hi...
No, I haven't used Duke traps yet.
I'm not sure that I understand your question...is there actually something physically wrong with the traps? Have animals been getting out of them?
If you could be more explicit...

How are you using them/what bait have you been using? I can give you some alternate locations/baits if you eliminate whats hasn't been working for you.
