keep track of what you buy and the color of the shells. I use winchester drylok for waterfowl(red) and remington shells for everything else(green or black). But I know that at least by me you aren't even allowed to have the lead on person if you are hunting waterfowl, probably applies to waterfowl management areas despite what you are hunting.

A magnet will identify the steel loads. Also, not a bad idea when buying surplus center fire ammo as it is nice to know if the hard ball stuff is steel core or lead.

Hunting on waterfowl areas requires non-toxic shot, no matter if you are after pheasant, grouse or waterfowl. Sometimes my shells get mixed up since I want to use lead in other areas and save the more expensive non-toxic loads for where they are necessary. Is there any quick and easily portable way to verify if the load is non-toxic if the print is worn off the shell?
