      I got a .17 savage and I love it! It is good gun and those little creatures fear it when Im bored.

                Ive got to say the best gun ive used for varments was a .22 rifle. I also like it becuase you can get hundreds of bullets for a few bucks.

                  Define "varmint".

                  If we're simply talking squirrel and rabbits, a .22 would suffice and the rifle choices are endless. Marlin's semi-auto can be purchased brand new (often with some kind of MFG rebate or another) for less than $110. The Ruger 10/22 is another popular and accurate choice.

                  If by "varmint", you mean coyote, fox, bobcat, etc, etc. I'd personally opt for the long-range .223 especially if you're a handloader or knows someone who does.
