How cold and for how long ?

Last year's gun-season deer opener, I had wood ticks crawling on me while I sat in the woods, and one in my leg when I got home. That was mid-late November, after three or four snowfalls and several hard frosts; the day was pretty warm, though, up past fifty just a short while after sunrise. Even when the ticks become inactive, I think they're able to survive and wake up when the temperature allows.

Cold will not kill ticks. They may become less active. I have observed ticks in every month of our Pennsylvania winters. Extreme cold does have some effect -20F for more than one month. Then it would be too cold for me to hunt.

A taxidermist friend in Mt Morris, NY used to spray the deer and bear with repellent before he would bring them inside.

I've killed multiple deer in near/below 0 temperatures that were covered in ticks. Couple good freezes does the trick for most of those crawlers around here.

Ticks slow down in the cold, but I still spray my clothes with tick repellent till late November. It's better to be safe.

Ticks are Cold weather Bird food for Blue Jays & Woodpecker's. Ticks live on all woodlien critters to feed.
