In this case the law is the law. Even if your intentions are to truly put it out of its misery you are still doing something illegal and can pay for it. Same goes when fishing. Do you always release a fish that may be an inch too short if you gill hooked it and know it's going to die? By law you are supposed to.

I have a general rule against saying that I would do anything illegal in a public forum. I'll just say that I would do what I think any true sportsman would.

Nature will take care of it.

In my opinion, it's worth the fine to help an animal, cops have hearts too, and would do the same thing if you called them to "Take care of it." And for fish, their brains aren't good enough to feel pain, they know they're dying, but it doesn't hurt.

I pretty much follow the law with animals. With fish, I always do---there's a real good reason for not letting a gut-hooked shortie slide, because some people would be intentionally gut hooking fish just so they could keep them. The crabs and turtles have to eat too. It may seem cruel to let a creature suffer, but nature has no compassion to speak of---no concept of cruel or kind.
