whats the difference hunting over bait piles or harvested corn fields ?

  • #2
I'd say that hunting a harvested cornfield isn't much different than hunting a good acorn wood patch.
Hunting over a bait pile is altering patterns to a very specific way intended to concentrate deer to a very small spot. The equivalent would be raking all of the acorns into a 25 square foot area.
I'm not a purist on this, but the fact that folks who bait always try to equate the two kind of amuses me.
If it makes no difference, is the same amount of work as hunting a harvest, a food source in the woods, or a dedicated food plot I doubt there'd be some many people pushing to do it.

Baiting where it's legal if you want to makes no difference to me. It's just not "the same thing."

I couldn't agree more and couldn't put it better than you did, jcarlin. If it's legal, then I'm all for it but to compare harvested field hunting to a bait pile is apples to oranges. Like shooting fish in a barrel to shooting fish in a pond: The fish may all still be in a pond, but they have much more chance to be where you aren't. Nothing guarantees success, but some things sure stack the odds in your favor. Otherwise, why would anyone do it? I am also amused by this comparison and feel like if it's legal and a hunter is comfortable doing it, then there should never be a reason to justify it.

I agree with the previous commenters, and I can't put it any better than they did. But I will expand upon the question by asking one of my own. What is the difference between hunting over a mock scrape and over a pile of bait? Both are intended to concentrate the deer (or just the bucks in the case of the scrape) in one spot where you can shoot them, but I know a lot of people who would never hunt over a pile of corn but think nothing of making a mock scrape near their tree.

Think of a salt block in a field for cows. Hunting over cut fields is like hunting over the entire field(which is grass that cows eat just like the deer eat cut crops). Or you could hunt over the salt block where you know they will key in on(like a bait pile).

A mock scrape is the ultimate "bait" pile. Those who hunt using scents are in effect baiters.

I have baited black bears since New Jersey passed the baiting law. My experience the majority of the Bears come to the bait pile during the hours of darkness.
I have hunted tree stands near corn fields also and most game animals are more at ease with a natural fields then bait piles. I saw plenty of bucks during day light heading to the corn fields.
Sorry, but I disagree it is not like shooting fish in a barrel. I bagged one New Jersey bear in six years. My trail cams have bagged a zillion black bears during the hours of darkness.

Bait pile brings deer to a specific spot where it can be ambushed from a predetermined position.
A cut field is wide open and deer can be anywhere.

I agree, I was driving on the 90 interstate in PA and passed about a 1000 acre field. There was a hunter along the first tree line and there was a hunter along the second tree line - there were deer standing exactly in the middle. I don't know if the hunters saw them, but the deer were feeding and not nervous at all.

                    Huntfishtrap,

That's not a bad point at all. I haven't thought about it much. If there's a difference is it in the reward?
Territorial markings that an animal might visit is tricking them to come back to your area, but I've never seen a deer hang out on a scrape for more than a minute.
I also think a lot of deer get spooked by the human scent, or learn to recognize that an excess of scent is a sign of hunters after a couple of weeks of hunting pressure.
There's also the reward. If I keep coming back to a spot where there's 500lbs of corn, there's a definite reward and incentive to stay and eat my fill. I'll keep coming back daily.
A scrape will get visited sporadically, and as part of a routine patrol of marking posts.

It's a good point. But getting back to the original discussion. It's legal.. but it's not the same as hunting a rub line.

I agree that it's a bit different, and I wasn't trying to say that there's anything wrong with it (or hunting over bait for that matter - where legal). I've just always thought it's ironic that some people are almost violently anti-baiting, but think it's completely acceptable to hunt over a mock scrape doused with scent.

                        Hi...

Corn fields can offer (mostly) corn...With a bait pile, you can use the 'bait' of your choice...!!
