The Humane Society is responsible for posting the following question on this Election Day ballet in the state of Maine; “Do you want to ban the use of bait, dogs or traps in bear hunting except to protect property, public safety or for research?” The animal rights organization wants future Maine bear hunters to shoot bears only while still-hunting. Any comments?

"....except to protect property, public safety or for research?"
-Hunting covers all three. I personally do not see the difference between baiting a bear and hunting over a field of crops for deer. It is not my preferred method of hunting, but I do not have any problem with others doing it.

I hunted black bears in Greenville, Maine approximately twenty years ago.
I hunted over bait in a tree stand using my compound bow. My hunting friend took his gun.
We both came back to New Jersey with Maine bears.
I would rather see the Maine Fish and Game Department using their science and research, watch over the welfare of black Bears. It scares me, when Maine voters using their emotions can decide the outcome over the more intelligent wildlife Biologists suggestions on the black bear harvest.
