As spring turkey hunting is just around the corner...what off the beaten track locator calls are used-- -- when things get tough and quiet in the spring woods....goose calls...mallard duck calls....train whistles...thunder....have at times illicited a response...what does everyone else pull out of the bag of tricks in springtime?

I was hunting a little ways off the road one time. A car came by and honked at a deer that was taking its time to cross. This car honking generated a gobble.

I have gotten responses from a car door slams, .22 bullet hitting a pop can, tree falling, and me sliding down a hill taking every leaf down with me.

Coyote howlers, pileated woodpecker calls and hawk calls are all legitimate shock gobble elicitors. Yelping loudly on a tube call works well, too. I've heard them gobble at factory whistles, police sirens, bellowing cows, braying jackasses and tugboat whistles, but not on such a reliable basis that I'd want to try to carry any of them with me.

            An Elk Bugle.
If they are going to gobble it never fails anywhere it is tried.
