I've got a Bear Grizzly that pulls 50#. In a previous answer someone recommended carbon arrows for a 40# recurve. I have always used Easton aluminum arrows and never considered carbon and I will tell you why. You have much lower arrow speed with a traditional bow and my feeling is you have to make up for that with additional arrow weight to get adequate penetration compared to a compound bow. What's your opinion? And why?

I am not a real big traditional-archery guy, so I couldn't say as far as real-world examples go, but I do know that mathematically, you would be correct.

I agree that you need the extra weight for penetration with traditional archery. You might have an option though, if you are interested in trying carbon out of your bow. Carbon Express makes the Pile Driver that has a heavier grain weight/inch than many aluminum arrows. I don’t know that they would work any better than aluminum for you, but it might be worth a look.

If aluminum is working for you don't change anything. I just felt that due to him being a beginner and the limited range he would face with a 40# bow that a carbon arrow would be better suited.

Actually, JM, I have been practicing with some Easton aluminum arrows that have a carbon core. They are a little heavier yet and shoot very smoothly.

Does that carbon core help with the straightness at all? Sounds pretty interesting.

I don't think straightness is an issue. It may add some spine but the big thing for me is they penetrate well with the additional weight. I'm sure some velocity is lost but with my recurve and the ranges I shoot I don't think it is important. I wouldn't use them with my compound bow.

I think you already have the arrows you need DSMBirddog...if you're talking about the easton FMJ's...i've been shooting them for a couple years now and they penetrate really well..I shot a moose with them and they did really well..also had pass throughs on a black bear & 2 deer this year as well. These arrows with a 140ish grain broadhead will weigh over 600 grains which is plenty. I also like to use the Grizzly single bevel broadheads.

Thanks, Tyler. I do like the FMJ's and will be using them for deer next fall. BTW, Happy New Year. Keep up the great blogs.

I am surprised that your question did not include the possibility of shooting wood
arrows. They are somewhat expensive, especially a good cedar arrow, but they are
easily spined for your recurve. I have shot cedar arrows for over 30 years, have
taken whitetails and 7 elk with them, very satisfied with arrow flight and performance.
I would suggest a larger fletching, a 6 inch feather is a good stabalizing factor. It is
becomming difficult to find good cedar, however, do not give up looking, the reward
is well worth the effort. If you wish to shoot traditional archery, you might as well go
all the way. I applaud your wish to forego the modern concept of archery as there is
no connection between a compound and the traditional concept. Stay true to the
                    original and to yourself !!!

up to 6 inches, it is a good stabilizing length. I applaud your desire to
shoot traditional archery as the modern concept has no connection
with the true form of shooting a bow. Wheels and pullies have no place
in the world of archery. Stay true to yourself and archery !!!
