Usually folks will advise you to buy an economical first rifle. While that makes sense if you are new to the sport and uncertain whether it is something you wish to do for a lifetime or just seeing if the experience is agreeable. If you have no doubt about pursuing the sport of hunting my advice is different. Buy the best damn rifle you can afford in a caliber that will allow you to shoot larger game and at short and long ranges. That is not to say that some of the less expensive rifles such as the Savage don't perform well but there are levels of quality that are apparent and there is no discounting the pride of owning something that you would not part with for a life time. Bolt actions give you the best selection of calibers with the best opportunity to maximize the full potential of cartridges as the action is very strong. If you intent to load your own bullets some day the bolt is again the right choice. Choose an all round cartridge such as a .308. a 30-06 or a .270 as these are good performers that are available on the shelf from Mississippi to Yellowknife, from Africa to Australia.
