I shot a coyote Saturday with a Rage two blade expandable broadhead. Didn't really get the results I was hoping for. So, I ask mechanical vs. fixed blade broadheads?

Fixed blades hands down.

For better penetration and a no fail system go with fixed blades. If you want a big hole and a system that is easy to tune use a mechanical. Rages suck I like my grim reapers.

Great question - and one that is guaranteed to get some dialog going. Personally, I'm a fixed-blade guy. I know how they'll behave, whether on a whitetail or an elk. Here's the bottom line with mechanicals: when they work, they work amazingly well - fly true, easy to tune and they leave a gaping exit hole. But when they don't work you are left scratching your head and wondering what you did wrong.

My guess on your coyote: your mechanical didn't meet enough resistance on the light-boned carcass and failed to open.

I would say fixed, although I have never used the mechanical ones.

I stick with my muzzy broadheads. They have never let me down. I agree with Andrew, mechanicals work well as long as they work. I'm not going to chance it on a buck of a lifetime.

Fixed, I have used mechanicals with nothing but great results. I worry about that one time when I have mechanical failure and wounding a trophy. I've retired my Spitfires for no reason other than worry of failure. That being said, my Thunderheads and G5 Montecs fly just as true as the Spitfires.

Was a big fan of the Grim Reapers and even dropped my first buck with on earlier this season. However, moday evening i took a nice shot on a doe, thought it was good, even found some good blood, then the trail just stopped and with out light i decided to look the following morning...nothing. now im going back to G5 montech, herd alot of good about them

i think fixed is a way better choice. less things can go wrong with them. if you live in a place where deer dont get to big (unfortunatly..) slick trick sells some pretty nice broadheads, but you have to assemble them.
