hi i am a new hunter and i am wondering what i should buy for my first gun. i am mainly going to be hunting mostly elk and whitetails so i want something that is powerful but not overkill. what would you suggest?

First of all, welcome to the sport of hunting! It's nice to see new faces in the woods. If you want to hunt deer and elk with one gun, I would recommend a .308 caliber rifle to start out with. My uncle hunts deer and coyotes with his .308, and it still has plenty of power for even the largest elk. I would also recommend a Kimber Montana or a Marlin 308MXLR as the model gun to buy. Good luck and welcome to the clan!

If you don't have a .22LR then seriously consider one before using a centerfire. It'll help you get the basics down and do it inexpensively.

.308 is a good caliber, you could also go with a .300 Rem Mag, .30-06, .338 Federal, 7mm Rem Mag. All of these could be used on both of those without being overkill on whitetail. As far as a model, I'd look into the Remington 700, Savage (few different models), or Tikka T3 Hunter. All of these guns can be found at a reasonable price. As noted in Outdoor Life's gun test '09, the Savage M11 FHNS comes with their new AccuStock that pumped out some serious accuracy. They tested in the .308 caliber and knocked down .8" 5 shot groups, All for $656. Pretty good buy in my books.

I shoot a Remington 721 in .270. Killed a bunch of whitetail with including the one in the picture posted by my name. It will kill elk, I have done so but requires very careful shot placement. I shoot Hornady 270 WIN 140 GR BTSP LIGHT MAGNUM. They have a MV about 3100 fps. I sight my group in at 2&3/4 inches high at 100 yards and I have a 6: point blank window out to 296 yards. Meaning I will not be above 3" line of sight or below 3" line of sight. If you get a good shot the deer will go down. I have killed elk and whitetails. The whitetails have been at distances around 350 yards. Love that 4-12 X scope.
          Good luck.

the 270 will definitly work but as bo stated requires careful shot placement if you are new to hunting, depending on your size and weight i would recomend a 30-06,

In my opinion a .338 is way too heavy for whitetails. To hunt both elk and deer, Id go with a .300Win Mag.

A good 30-06 will work for pretty much anything. There not to species specific and ammo certainly is less expensive than it is for a .300. Plus there is more room in the brass to hold a higher volume of powder than a .308. As far as the rifle goes id choose a good bolt action along the lines o a rem 700 or a ruger mk II

i have a 30-06 and i love it. its a really cheap savage rifle the 111fcns it came with a scope and was really cheap about 500 in canada. it kills elk deer and i would have to say lots of the animals in north america. a 270 .308 or somethings along the lines of that owuld be plenty enough to kill elk deer and most animals

It is always hard to go wrong with a 30-06 and I am very happy with my new Savage 116.
                        Good luck.

new hunter - try the 308 with tikka t3. good combination, recoil not too bad, i find the 308, lots of ammo, carries tons of 18o grain bullets. in fact, i find the 308 with 289 grains overpowering for deer. when you have gained more experience, you will see what's really important in hunting. not always the bigger and magnums. but what you can handle very well and accurately. more shooting translates to more fun and more hunting. all these choices about new rifles and shorts and longs are all about business. you got to see how the game falls and appreciate your ability more than the caliber and the gun.

                            correction - it's not 289 grains for 308. i really meant 180 grains.
