        Could be two reasons.

        One is that there were a lot of cigarette ads in the old magazines.

            If he had to shoot it 3 times with a 7mm Weatherby he obviously missed the first 2 or had pisspoor shot placement. Happy Trails

              Before "huntin" tv, hunters were taught to keep shooting till the animal went down to avoid needless suffering and lowering the odds of one getting away or running down into a ravine, river, or impenetrable thicket. Then "huntin" tv showed us how to shoot and gawk. I've dropped animals with a second shot that wasn't needed, saved them a little suffering. And you could argue it might have saved the meat, more bloodshot, maybe(try soaking in ice water) but less adrenaline (hence less lactic acid)pumping through the meat.
