I once described a day of hunting to a college-student, politically-driven vegan. It was practically a Gene Hill essay of feelings, connection to nature, spiritual contentment, and finally, a totally clean-kill harvest of meat (of which, every ounce would be eaten). ]

Made no difference to her. I killed an animal. Period.

And for some who are not vegans: I always make the point that store-bought meat had to be killed by someone. The animal still died so people could eat it. I find it more respectable to put forth the effort and knowledge to go get it myself.

Often, I get the sense that the non-hunter or anti-hunter understands what I'm saying -- but it's still a matter of "How could you?!" For these people, I think it's a lot like the anti-gun argument: If you hunt (or own a gun), there must be something wrong with YOU. Period. All the other points and arguments are incidental. Whether you're a slob hunter or consummate conservationist, there is just simply something wrong with you.

That, I think, is behind much of the objection. Honestly I think the slob-hunter point used to be the primary public-image issue -- and I still think it's important -- but I also think that with the way our whole culture is changing, it will matter less and less even if we do clean out the slobs.

The hardcore anti-hunters are much less of a threat than the lack of interest by the non-hunting public, in my opinion. It's not the people who are outright against hunting that will decide the future. It's the people who are apt to just shrug, think "I don't hunt and don't know any hunters," and vote accordingly. Sure, the hardcores get the referendum on the ballot. But then a bunch of people who really don't have a chip in the game do the voting.

Fewer and fewer people are becoming adults with the ability (or inclination) to think outside their own experiences, and outside the approval of their peers. And feeling politically "enlightened" is more important than ever to many.

The vegans and PETA members really don't have much credibility; plenty of non-hunters, too, think they're morons. But we've always had a lot of support from non-hunters who've taken time to consider our reasons for hunting. That's what is changing, I fear.

I agree with your logic Matt ! There is no single reason for those who are not in our corner considering our sport. There are the vegans, the anti gun people, the anti hunter pe sey and I was only pointing out one aspect of the problem, and this happened to center around our own participation in our beloved sport and how our own people happen to be a contributing factor in the changes that are happening ! I was in no way laying the entire blame at their feet. Thanks for your comments !

I believe any hunter who doesn’t follow the game laws in that state or province is a slob hunter.
Poaching is like cheating and stealing in my opinion.

If you think that is a direct answer, then your comprehension of the English language is still at a third grade level. Maybe you really don’t know what a 3rd party is. If you are not able to explain your problem with me in your own words like a man, then don’t look for help from other sources !
