  • What is your primary rifle for big game hunting ?

    Do you carry a back-up ?
Do you have a back-up rifle at camp?

It depends where I am going to hunt and what the area is like. For example in Mich. I can get a shot 5 telephone poles away so my .300WbyMag gets the nod. In the Adirondacks, by boat I take my single shot 45/70. Still hunting I might take my 6.5mmSweed, or my Remington 700 30-06. Specifically for bear I would take my single shot 45/70. Most times I have my Winchester '94 at camp for a back up or, if I get tired of carrying my primary rifle or want a taste of years past, I go with the old 30-30. Generally, I am not carrying a hand gun as a back up but sometimes carry my S&W .44mag as the primary firearm

        Savage 11 .308 hoghunter.
I don't travel far for the most part, but when I rifle hunt I'm generally on the far side of the state. An old Montgomery Ward .30-30 is generally on board as a back-up.

My utility rifle is a .300win mag it basically goes everywhere with me.

If I'm deer hunting it's probably my .280Rem, my Ruger Ranch 6.8 is typically back at camp as a backup, or if I decide to push deer.

My plan is to use three rifles this coming deer season. Of course feral pigs will be targets of opportunity.

1st is an AR in .300 Blackout, adjustable length stock, Nikon 3x9 scope, suppressor attached. The load will be Hornady's factory loaded 190 grain subsonic.

2nd is an AR in .300 Blackout, fixed stock, Nikon fixed 3x scope, no suppressor. I'll use a handload with Barnes 110 grain TAC-TX bullets, supersonic.

3rd is a Ruger American Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor, Vortex scope, suppressor attached. It will use factory loaded Hornady 143 grain bullets.

Selection of rifle will depend on which part of the lease I plan to hunt. Most shots will be 50 to 60 yards but some stands provide up to a 300 yard shot.

I have my Rainy day back up rifle a Winchester mod-94 in 32Spl. It also for some on the guys who forget Ammo or Rifle Home. It's a long drive to Miami from Northern Florida to get your rifle.

Looks like you don't have a primary. In addition to the three mentioned in my answer, I've got another 14 rifles that COULD be used for big game. Also, 3 shotguns, two handguns, two crossbows, a compound bow, and a spear. Heck, I've even intentionally killed pigs with the SUV by running them over. But, your question was about primary rifles.

Always crap happens. 25-06 is my new rifle for deer. 243 probably the back up. But usually carry a 30-30 in the truck during deer season. Heck usually have at least two rifles with me during season just in case.

It's good to see a Jeep with some mud on it. I keep seeing these highway heroes in their sported out 4WD vehicles that you know dang well never have and never will leave the pavement unless it's to be pulled over for speeding.

My main deer and hog gun is a Ruger American 7mm-08 compact with a 7mm-08 Ruger American standard as backup. Also have .270 Winchester 70 and a .243 Ruger American compact. They stay in the safe at the camp during the season.

Each is a primary for the area I hunt.

We think alike in many ways Jimbo. Carried my single shot 45-70 on a couple of hunts last year. Will switch to the 7400 in .30-06 this season if the .300 BLK doesn't perform as expected
