  • Judging bears

Been googling this topic the last couple weeks and I’m curious to hear what methods people on here use to field-judge the size of a black bear. I’ve only seen a few wild ones and they weren’t long looks but have been getting lots of trailcam pics this year. I can tell some are larger than others but having a really hard time guessing a size or age, which from what I’ve read, seems to be pretty normal even for experienced professionals. All of these photos were from the same spot, taken between Saturday and today. The most consistent bear activity I’ve seen from anywhere I’ve had my camera this year.

From an earlier black bear thread, I received a return phone call from the Alabama black bear biologist Thomas Harms.
He said there are approximately eight hundred black bears in Bama. He also said, the sows average three Cubs per year.
He was a real nice guy but a little tough to understand with his southern drawl accent. LOL

If you do the math and assume half those eight hundred Bears are sows. That makes four hundred sows. Cut the sows in half again because they have cubs every two years. Multiple 3 cubs times 200 sows. That means the Bama bear population is increasing 600 new Bears a year. Now subtract, 100 Bears for road kill Bears, Bears killing other Bears, poaching, predators killing Cubs and other deaths making it an extra 500 Bears in the Bama woods each year. ?

Be careful Bama guys. Take precautions while walking in the woods. ??

Gary, thank you so very much for contacting Mr. Harms and getting the latest information on Alabama's black bear population. I'll start practicing safer habits when in the woods and be on the lookout for any of the critters.

I'll try to get photos of any bear I see.

Piggy, Your link is dated June of 2016, it's now August of 2018. In two years your bear population went up a thousand.
Plus your link wants me to subscribe. I am not signing up and subscribing with every Tom, Dick and Harry link out there.

Every time I talk to a Wildlife employee from Bama you do not believe me. ????? Call him and find out for yourself.?
He is the black bear Biologist expert down there. ?
              Good Luck ?

Gary, the bear in the water is bigger than 250. Look how small the head is in relation to the shoulders - not the best angle. I say 350+, besides as seen in the picture he is eating good.

Jim, the bear is soaked. It hard to tell.. He looks small with that fish . His back line looks horizontal also. No big rear.

Outlaw, your second photo down from the top looks like the biggest bear of the four.

Nice photos, Outlaw. Black bears have been in my area for a few years now, but I have yet to see more than a berry-seed dung pile.

Can't really say I'm a huge Auburn football fan. I may watch one game per year. Pro teams have been tried in Birmingham and all efforts failed. This State is mostly oriented towards college sports.

BTW, Bama Bear Biologist Thomas Harms wants me to send him photos of my trail cam heavy weight black bears.
I told him the New Jersey bear biologists call them big boars belly draggers. The biggest one he caught was in the three hundreds.
Wait till he sees photos of those Jersey brutes. ?

Hey Matt, are there any black bears around Pulaski, New York area.
Can they bait bears in NY?

Jimbo, I should be ok with what I have already except for the .223 … I've got no confidence in those small bullets.
