"It's an unfortunate and tragic accident," Hajna said. "It's a rare situation."

Indeed. The family and friends must have been hit hard with the news.

Carrying bear spray is almost a 'must' in bear country. Running from one is about the last thing you want to do. Stick together so you present a larger and more imposing threat to the bear. A black bear can run MUCH faster than you can...!! Climbing a tree is also not the best idea, as they can climb higher and faster then you can...(usually, anyway)...!!
    Great advice, thanks!

You are allowed to bait bears in New Jersey during the December bear hunting season.
My brother went out to his truck and ate his lunch. He went back to cut tree limbs up by his elevated tree stand. He walked twenty yards from a huge bear standing over that bait pile. My brother said the hair on his neck went up and that bear was not leaving that food.
My brother then walked back slowly away from the bear but kept facing the bear. He said it scared him because the bear had a scary look on his face.
My brothers now do the tree stand, climbing steps and maintenance first then dump the food last.
I do the same thing with my trail cam. Hang the camera, clear out all the forest items in the way of the photo then place my python lock on my camera.
Last thing I do is dumped the dry dog food, corn, horse feed and meat last. Then get out of Dodge.
"the bear had a scary look on his face" ... LOL!

A New Jersey black bear has killed a Rutgers college student hiking with his friends yesterday. The 300 pound boar (male bear) followed the five hikers on the trail when they made a major mistake. They all started to run in five different directions away from the bear. One 22 year old never regrouped with his friends. The authority's whet into the woods and found the bear circling the body. The bear was killed and DNA will determine if the boar was the killer. New Jersey first bear fatality ever.
