I've been looking into headlamps for blood tracking. I like the light a maglight gives off, but want to cut down on weight. Are LED's good for tracking, and how important is the lumen rating?

I've had a lot of luck with LED's lightweight and virtually shock proof. I recently got a Gerber Recon, It is small and lightweight with a clip that could be used to attach it to a hat. It has a revolving head that has 4 different color LED's. White, Blue (for blood), Red, and Green. I went for this light for its multi-purpose functionality. It retails for $22. If you prefer a headlamp gerber does make one called the Carnivore Headlight ($32). I am not sure how the Lumens will effect the ability to see the blood.

I have never used it for blood tracking(I have been extremely fortunate in that respect), but I do use a little headlamp by Energizer, has 4 white LEDs and 2 red ones, with three different configurations for the white light. I picked it up at Walmart for about $15. There again, I can't say about how good it is for blood tracking, but it's what I have used to get to my stand in the mornings and for that it is great.
Good luck on your search.
