Getting a new Ruger M77 Hawkeye in a .308. Love to deer hunt, but might also get the chance to elk hunt in the future. Anyone know how the .308 takes on elk? Or should I bring along something bigger? Thanx

I'm not 100% sure but i've seen videos of elk killed with the .308 and i know people who said they have killed an elk with the .308 so im thinking that should be good enough that you wont need anything bigger

Your 308 will be okay for elk hunting. You will need to get closer than some folks and pick your shots. There are other calibers that might be better for taking an elk and give you more flexibility in shot selection, such as a 300 mag of one sort or another.

A .308 should not have any problem at all taking down an elk.

The 308 will be a fine cartridge for elk, of coarse the 300 mag or 338 mag would be better at longer ranges but as long as you keep the shots under 200yds it ill do the trick.

With todays bullet selection if you shoot one that will hold together you should have no problem as long as you keep you shot within reason. Remember shot placement is everything. Good luck.

I love a 308. I have taken a couple elk as well as 2 black bear,5 moose,4 caribou,and a griz with mine and all animals fell within 100 yards of where they were standing.

A 308 will do just fine for elk. My brother's father-in-law used a Winchester model 88 with 165 grain handloads and shot several elk with it. I was close by when he shot his last elk, heart surgery but an end to his hunting, he nailed a running cow elk at about 300 yards.
For what its worth he hung up his 7mm Mag in favor of his 308. A friend of mine who was on the Marine Rifle Team used the same rifle to shoot a deer at 1000 yards in front of two witnesses.
